Best Places to Elope in Québec for Peak Fall Colors
Two of the questions I’m most often asked by my couples are when and where to see peak fall colors in Québec. The province is well-known for its beautiful fall foliage and often attracts couples who want to elope amidst the magical shades of red, orange, and gold. Honestly, who wouldn’t?
However, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind when planning a fall elopement in Québec, including the duration of our peak colors, proper timing, weather, and more.
I’ve created this guide to help you choose the right time of year to elope in Québec to experience the beauty of fall, as well as navigate all the best destinations for your celebration!
And don’t worry, I’ve also addressed common misconceptions and myths about fall in Québec to ensure your day is as easy (and colorful) as possible.

Considerations for Your Fall Elopement in Québec
Before we get into the specifics of when and where to elope in Québec for fall colors, there are several important logistical considerations to keep in mind. Locating fall colors at their peak isn’t always as easy as you might think it is!
Duration & Timing
Did you know that the peak of Québec’s fall colors only lasts around 7-14 days? I wish it were longer, because I could truly admire the vibrant foliage year-round, but unfortunately, that is not the case.
Because the window for experiencing the colors at their true peak is fairly small—and varies by location—it’s vital that you pick the best timing for your elopement date.
If you elope too early, forests will still be green. If you elope too late, you’ll risk the leaves having already fallen, and the forests will look mostly gray. Neither of these are bad, but if you’re envisioning bright colors, they won’t offer the scenery you’re looking for.

In just a moment, we’ll dive further into timing your elopement to align with Québec’s peak colors. Spoiler alert: not only do the colors change by the week, but by location…making it all the more important that you pick the right date and destination.
Don’t worry, though: as an experienced Québec elopement photographer who knows the area, the seasons, and the landscapes deeply, I’ll provide my expertise every step of the way so you can feel confident about your choices.
Colors & Trees
It’s important to remember that not all trees (or leaves) are created equal in Québec. Or anywhere, for that matter!
Forest colors will look completely different depending on the location and the variety of trees growing in the area. Some are more colorful with orange, red, and yellow maple trees, whereas some are mostly yellow and green with balsam fir and white birch trees.
Because of this, taking into account the type of trees and their unique fall colors will be crucial to deciding the overall “look” and color scheme of your elopement photos. Québec’s forest shows fall colors best because of our maple trees and other similar varieties!
Expert Tip: Avoid eloping in old forests with a heavy amount of pine trees, as pine trees don’t change colors or shed their leaves.

Weather
Not only do peak colors vary by location and tree type, but they also depend heavily on the weather.
If you’ve ever been curious about why leaves change colour in the fall, here’s the simple explanation. Leaves get their colour from pigments. The main one is chlorophyll, which makes leaves green, but there are also other pigments responsible for yellow, orange, and red tones. During summer, longer days and plenty of sunlight help leaves produce lots of chlorophyll, which is why trees stay green.
As fall arrives in Québec and days grow shorter, leaves stop producing as much chlorophyll. When the green fades, the other pigments that were already present in the leaf begin to show, revealing shades of yellow, orange, and red. Cooler temperatures and rain can also influence how quickly these colours appear and how long they last. Nature has a beautiful way of marking the change of seasons, doesn’t it? 🍁
Anyway, let’s move on to a brief overview of what fall weather is like in Québec, so you know what to expect for your elopement.
Late September through early October in Québec tends to be pretty mild, with temperatures on warm sunny days staying around 20°C/68°F and temperatures on cold mornings around 6°C/43°F. If you plan on hiking to get to a mountain top, you might even see some snow starting early to mid-October, especially in the morning.
In my opinion, this is one of the best kinds of weather for elopements since it’s not too cold or too hot. It’s the ideal season to spend time outdoors (hiking, stargazing, watching sunsets, etc.), while also being just cool enough to enjoy cozy time indoors. Fall in Québec also means fewer mosquitoes, which is ideal if you were thinking of eloping near a lake or a river and were worried about being eaten alive by bugs; it won’t be much of an issue around that time.
Note that some locations around Québec can be windy in the fall, so make sure to be prepared with a comfortable jacket you can wear during your elopement.

When is the Best Time to See Fall Colors in Québec?
The best time of year for peak fall colors in Québec is…
Between the last week of September and the first week of October.
There’s a big misconception that fall colors are at their best in mid-October. While this might be true in urban areas like Montréal or Québec City, most remote areas, like national parks, experience the fall colors much earlier, and by mid-October, half of the leaves have already fallen. So if you’re traveling to Québec and want to experience the best fall timing, I highly recommend you elope in nature first and then spend time mid-October in Montréal or Québec City.
As I mentioned before, each region of Québec has slightly varying fall color timelines because of climate differences.
For example, in late September, Mont-Tremblant and Laurentides are at their peak fall colors; however, only less than 2 hours away in Montréal, the fall colors haven’t even started. Couples driving up there from Montréal are often very surprised by how different the foliage looks only a few hundred kilometers away.
With my extensive knowledge of Québec’s fall foliage across the province, I offer guidance to couples booking me for their elopement to make sure you choose the best timing for the scenery you’re envisioning. In the next section of this guide, I’ll be sharing my favorite regions for fall colors in Québec, as well as what time of year is best for elopements.

Québec Fall Foliage & Map Reports
Fun fact: Québec’s tourism board has an interactive map that shows the real-time evolution of fall colors across the province. However, this is only available when viewing it live. You can check the map here!
